Biography

Mario has been researching and teaching social science and gender studies at the tertiary level since 2000. Before joining Centennial College, he was a post-doctoral researcher at Umeå Centre for Gender Studies, Umeå University, Sweden. In that posting, he conducted a research project on exploring gender and familial practices among Chinese immigrant academics in Sweden. He developed an interest in gender studies during his college years and his research is mainly on critical studies on men and masculinities, particularly focusing on the construction of masculinity and fatherhood within the Chinese family. He is also interested in how young people negotiate their sexualities and masculinities with the larger structure, including the popular culture. He has published in international journals such as Gender, Place, and Culture, Marriage and Family Review, and Journal of Sexual Medicine. He also serves as an editorial board member and reviewer for the Journal of Gender Studies. Occasionally, he writes theatre and film reviews. Mario believes that learning is a process of knowledge construction, similar to the research process. He is happy to be a facilitator and partner of his students on their path to knowledge-building which they find useful even after they go out of the classroom.
