Executive Interview with Dr. Jeffrey Hung, Manager of R&D and Strategy and Ms. Suzanne Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of Friends of the Earth

An in-depth interview was conducted with Dr. Jeffrey Hung, Manager of R&D and Strategy, and Ms. Suzanne Cheung, Chief Executive Officer, of Friends of the Earth (FOE), one of Hong Kong's oldest NGOs dedicated to environmental issues. Dr. Hung discussed problems concerning climate change in local and global context, and research efforts and measures to promote understanding among policymakers and stakeholders. Ms. Cheung explained in details the organizational structure of FOE, providing a clear framework to demonstrate how the veteran organization continues to renew and re-adapt itself to further environmental causes in the changing landscape of demographics and technology.

Executive Interview with Dr. Ilex Lam, The Founder of iEnterprise Foundation

An executive interview was conducted with Dr. Ilex Lam regarding iEnterprise, a social enterprise in Hong Kong providing training and job opportunities for the underprivileged group suffering from disabilities or illness. In this interview, Dr Lam introduced the history, operation, business and social values of iEnterprise. He also shared with us the tripartite collaborative model (TCM) by using iEnterprise as an example.

Executive Interview with Ms. Hanna HALLIN, Sustainability Manager – Greater China of H&M Hennes & Mauritz Ltd

An executive interview was conducted with Ms. Hanna Hallin regarding the global garment collecting initiative of H&M, the second largest fashion retailer in the world. Used garment collection offers a means to minimize waste and alleviate the landfill problem. It is also an important step towards a closed-loop fashion supply chain. In the interview, light was shed on the sustainability-oriented business concept of the company, as well as the operations, challenges and promotion of the collecting initiative.

Centennial College’s case won the “Nominated Case Award” in the 2015 Global Contest for the “Best China-Focused Cases”

Centennial College's case entitled Defying High Barriers to Entry: The Marketing Mix of 759 written by Ailie Tang and W H Lo won the "Nominated Case Award" in the 2015 Global Contest for the "Best China-Focused Cases". Two other cases, Uber China: Riding with Chinese Characteristics written by Amy Yip and Cinty Li and Alibaba's Alitrip: Creating Travel Innovation for Competitive Advantages written by Amy Yip and Minyi Huang, were accepted by "Shanghai MBA Case Library".

The 2015 Global Contest for the "Best China-Focused Cases" was co-organized by China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), Shanghai MBA Case Development and Sharing Platform, and The Global Platform of China Cases. Among a total of 280 cases, 155 came up to the criteria of Shanghai MBA Case Library; 7 cases won the "Nominated Case Award"; and 2 of the 7 nominated cases won the "Best Case Award".

During the interview, Dr Ho shared with us how Hong Kong Ferry transformed from a transportation service provider to a property developer and the CSR initiatives the company had undertaken in the past years. In addition, he revelaed the difficulties Hong Kong Ferry went though during the transformation, and how he and his team successfully turned the company to a new page.

Mr. Kevin She joined our executive interview on October 12 2015. He shared with us his experience on the establishment and operation of SC Storage, a pioneering storage service provider in Hong Kong. Light was also shed on using big data to create competitive advantages and seize business opportunities. Mr. She concluded the interview with some valuable advices on how to develop and maintain profitable customer relationship in the long run.  

 

Centennial College’s Research Paper is Accepted by The 15th International Conference on Electronic Business (ICEB 2015)

Centennial College's research paper entitled Examining the Effects of the Internet of Things (IoT) on E-commerce: Alibaba Case Study has been accepted by the forthcoming 15th International Conference on Electronic Business (ICEB 2015) held December 6-10, 2015.  The authors of this paper Dr. Amy Yip and Mr. Yihong Yao will make presentation and have in-depth discussion with international scholars and business leaders in the conference.  This year, the conference is hosted by Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.  The theme of this year’s conference is the Internet of Things (IOT).

On October 5 2015, Ms. Salina Ghafur shared with us the operations of Sina Weibo in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Sina Weibo is a leading Chinese social media platform. Ms. Ghafur enlightened us how enterprises could employ social media marketing to encourage customers to generate contents on companies' weibo webpages. During the interivew, Ms. Ghafur also shared the future development plan of products and services of Sina Weibo.

We were honored to have Dr. Michael Chan to share with us his opinions and knowledge of succession planning during the interview held on 16 September 2015. Dr. Chan also illustrated the theories and implications of the “5-dimensional framework for family succession” that he helped to develop in the past. Besides, as an honorary chairman who just stepped down from the stage, Dr. Chan had plenty of precious experience to share with the audience about how to ensure a smooth transition from one management cabinet to the next.

Ms Daphne Ip was kind enough to come and share with us her views and opinions on fair trade practices in Hong Kong. During the conversation, she also revealed the difficulties in encouraging Hong Kong people and companies to use fair trade products. Besides, she gave advice on how enterprises could better satisfy their stakeholders’ expectations on them for being socially responsible through embracing fair trade practices.

Two rounds of executive interview were conducted on May 27 and June 9 with Mr Coils Lam Wai-chun, who talked about the operational matters of 759 Store, such as IT applications, Estate Management, Retail Management, Logistics, and Merchandising. During the interviews, Mr Lam shared with us his invaluable experience of running this retail giant which enjoyed rapid growth in the past few years, He also enlightened us on how corporations could implement CSR practices in different ways.
