Professor Cheng Kin Fai is a synthetic chemist. His main research interest is synthesis of biologically active natural products, especially those isolated from Chinese herbs, and their analogues. He has published over seventy papers in international journals. Professor Cheng has served as an advisor to the Task Force on Fertility Regulation of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the representative of Hong Kong in the Regional Network for the Chemistry of Natural Products in Southeast Asia, United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Professor Cheng received a BSc (Special) degree from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and a PhD degree from the University of British Columbia as a Commonwealth Scholar. He spent a year at the California Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral research associate. Professor Cheng is a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry and a Chartered Chemist.

Professor Cheng has rich experience in teaching and administration in HKU, having taught in the Department of Chemistry for over 30 years (1970-2002) and served as the Dean of the Faculty of Science for two terms (1994-1999). He is currently an Honorary Professor in the Department of Chemistry of HKU. Before joining Centennial College, he was the first Principal of the HKU SPACE Community College between October 2001 and December 2010.
